# Around Sri Lanka in Twelve Days: An Honest Recap

We spent about ten days on the ground in Sri Lanka — July 2 to July 11, 2026 — bookended by a two-day travel leg each way, so call it roughly twelve days door to door (June 30 to July 12). It was a loop: start and end near Colombo, down the coast to Bentota, up into the hill country at Nuwara Eliya, through Kandy, out to the cultural triangle at Kandalama, and back to the beach at Negombo before flying home.

## Transportation

**Flights.** We flew SFO to Singapore in business class on [Singapore Airlines](https://www.singaporeair.com/) (SQ 33), booked with credit card points — about 120,000 points per ticket, which penciled out to roughly $1,200 per person. That was an incredible deal and the flight was restful and luxurious. If you have points, do this. It was the single best-value part of the whole trip.

The second leg, Singapore to Colombo on [SriLankan Airlines](https://www.srilankan.com/) (UL 307), was the opposite: a very old aircraft, seats falling apart, no seatback TVs, and just-okay food. Next time I'd look for a Singapore Airlines flight on that leg, or another carrier.

The flight home (UL 503 / BA 191, Colombo to London to Austin) was underwhelming — SriLankan economy was very cramped. The smart move was breaking the journey in London to get real sleep before the second long leg. Next time I'd hunt for a business-class points deal on the return too.

**Getting around in-country.** We arranged the whole loop — hotels and a private van with driver — as a package through a travel agent, which is also how I'd tell you to book the vetted site guides. A private van and driver is the right call: the parents were with us, the drives are long, and the hill-country roads are genuinely precarious. Rough drive times so you can plan:

- Colombo to Bentota: \~2 hrs down the Southern Expressway, easy.
- Bentota up to Nuwara Eliya: a long \~5–6 hr climb.
- Nuwara Eliya to Kandy: \~2.5–3 hrs on the winding A5.
- Kandy to Kandalama: another \~2–2.5 hrs.

Do the Kandy-to-Kandalama stretch before dark — the roads get hard to see at night. Early July: cool and damp in the hill country, hot and humid on the coast, so pack a layer for Nuwara Eliya.

## Hotels

**Colombo —** [**Cinnamon Grand**](https://www.cinnamonhotels.com/cinnamon-grand-colombo)**.** Five-star, the best value of the trip, if you can get executive lounge access. We had a huge suite with a connecting double for the parents, who loved it. The real highlight was that lounge: a top-floor space with gorgeous views, all-day food and drink, a breakfast buffet, an amazing 3pm high tea, and a 5pm happy hour. Get that access if you can. Highly recommend.

**Bentota —** [**Taj Bentota**](https://www.tajhotels.com/en-in/hotels/taj-bentota-sri-lanka) **(2 nights).** Good all around: pool, beach, ocean, rooms, and buffet all solid. Everyone enjoyed it, no complaints. That said, we'd wanted [Cinnamon Bentota](https://www.cinnamonhotels.com/cinnamon-bentota-beach), which in my experience is still better, but it was booked out for a wedding. For the same price, book Cinnamon Bentota over Taj if you can get it.

**Nuwara Eliya —** [**Heritance Tea Factory**](https://www.heritancehotels.com/teafactory/) **(1 night).** A unique property perched high up, reached by a precarious \~30-min road. We did its free, easy, enjoyable in-house tea factory tour. But knowing what I know now, I'd have stayed at the [Grand Hotel](https://www.thegrandhotelnuwaraeliya.com/) in Nuwara Eliya instead — a genuinely lovely property, easy to get to, and far better positioned for onward travel.

**Kandalama —** [**Heritance Kandalama**](https://www.heritancehotels.com/kandalama/) **(2 nights).** Amazing, and I wish we'd stayed longer — the best stay of the trip. We did the Geoffrey Bawa architecture tour of the hotel, a free in-house tour, which was awesome. Don't book half board here — keep dinners flexible for the signature experiences like the cave dinner and the high tea with elephants.

**Negombo —** [**Jetwing Beach**](https://www.jetwinghotels.com/jetwingbeach/) **(2 nights).** This one I wouldn't recommend. It was fine, but small, with limited options and slow, limited meal service. I'd stay at the Heritance or Cinnamon properties in Negombo, or at [Jetwing Blue](https://www.jetwinghotels.com/jetwingblue/), instead.

**Best value hotel:** Cinnamon Grand Colombo with executive lounge access. **Best stay overall:** Heritance Kandalama.

## Food

**Best meal of the trip:** [**Nuga Gama**](https://www.cinnamonhotels.com/cinnamon-grand-colombo/dining/nuga-gama)**, the Cinnamon Grand's village-style restaurant.** The first night we hosted dinner for 30 friends here and it was perfect: a private air-conditioned room, live music, a traditional Sri Lankan dance performance, and an incredible spread. We picked it specifically because it's a fully Sri Lankan buffet — not a general buffet with a token Sri Lankan section — and because Nuga Gama is built to feel like a real Sri Lankan village. You genuinely forget you're inside a five-star hotel. Highly recommend, and easy to book the private room for a group.

[**Peach Valley**](https://www.facebook.com/PeachValleySriLanka/)**, Colombo.** Fine for a work dinner with the Allion team, but the food quality has slipped since my past visits. I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

## Tours and Activities

**Colombo city tour — good, not great.** In hindsight we should have hired a guide instead of playing it by ear. We saw [Gangaramaya Temple](https://gangaramaya.com/), [Independence Square](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independence%5FMemorial%5FHall), [Royal College](https://royalcollege.lk/) (my old high school), Port City, the Old Parliament, [Lotus Tower](https://colombolotustower.lk/), and [BMICH](https://www.bmich.com/). The shopping was the highlight: [Barefoot](https://barefootceylon.com/) and a batik store next door, and especially [Galle Face One](https://onegalleface.com/), an incredible, huge, modern mall that's a great one-stop for Sri Lankan brands. We loved [Spa Ceylon](https://lk.spaceylon.com/) there for gifts.

**Kandy —** [**Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic**](https://sridaladamaligawa.lk/)**.** We grabbed a quick meal and bathroom break at [Queen's Hotel](https://queenshotel.lk/), then walked over to the Temple of the Tooth.

**On the road up.** We stopped at [Seetha Amman (Sita Eliya) Temple](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seetha%5FAmman%5FTemple) — meaningful to my mother-in-law, but I wouldn't recommend the stop — and the [Ramboda Hanuman Temple](https://www.facebook.com/sribhaktahanumanofficial/), also a skip. [Ramboda Falls](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramboda%5FFalls) was nice.

**Geoffrey Bawa architecture tour at Heritance Kandalama.** Awesome, and worth building time around. It's a free in-house tour — just ask at the hotel.

**Cultural triangle — our one real misstep.** We chose [Polonnaruwa](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polonnaruwa) over [Anuradhapura](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anuradhapura) and hired a guide on the spot, which was a mistake. The foreigner site tickets were steep per person, negotiating with guides was a hassle, and the guide who promised we could see enough by driving past the sites barely showed us anything. In retrospect I'd go to Anuradhapura — its monuments are larger and more striking from a distance — but know it's sprawling and driver-dependent, not a stroll. Either way, book a vetted guide through your travel agent to meet you at the hotel rather than leaving it to chance at the gate.

If I'd given Kandalama three nights instead of two, I'd have spent one day on [Dambulla](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dambulla%5Fcave%5Ftemple) — [Sigiriya](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigiriya), the Dambulla Cave Temple, and [Pidurangala](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidurangala) — and one on a day trip to Anuradhapura.
